Just thinking about this last week with Chadwick Boseman’s death, the shooting of Jacob Blake, the unrest in Kenosha and all I could think about was Psalm 90: 12
So, teach us to number our days, that we may cultivate and bring to you a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12, AMP
Chadwick embodied that verse.
This man found out he had colon cancer in 2016 and proceeded to star in 6 films with another one waiting to be released. Films that required him to bulk up and slim down all while probably enduring chemotherapy and radiation. Let’s list them out:
- Marshall released 2017, filmed 2016
- Avengers: Infinity War released 2018, filmed 2017
- Black Panther released 2018, filmed 2017
- Avengers: Endgame released 2019, filmed 2017
- 21 Bridges released 2019, filmed in 2018
- Da 5 Bloods released 2020, filmed in 2019
- And one more that is yet to be released: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
This man took this verse to heart. It’s like he knew that verse and strove to live it every day. He bulked up, slimmed down, and bulked back up again and was sick. It’s hard enough for regular folks to lose weight or gain muscle and this man did it while fighting a battle that ultimately ended his life. I don’t know about you but his story has really got me thinking. We don’t number our days correctly. Let me only talk about myself — I don’t number my days correctly. All of us have a set time in this world and we don’t act like it. What if we knew — like knew knew our days were numbered? What would we do? How would we act? Chadwick knew his days were numbered and he pursued his dreams — his why — with dogged determination! I think this moment is a clarion call for us to go out and do what we’ve dreamed of doing! This is a moment for us to really take stock of our lives, look at each of our days as a precious gift and fight hard to make it count.
“Purpose is not related to career. It’s not related to a job. Its related to what God put inside you that you’re supposed to give to the world.”
Chadwick Boseman
This year has been a whole lot but it is not over! Let’s get serious about our dreams. I challenge you to take a page from Chadwick’s book of life and fight to make dreams come true. Spend time discovering your why, getting focused about your goals and desires, and making something major happen! My prayer is that I and each one of you take this moment to readjust and live like these days are numbered. I’m praying this moment in history motivates you to push harder, and strive further. I’m praying that as we mourn the death of such an influential man and the turmoil happening in this land, that we rise again and decide this moment to live like we knew the number of our days!
Thank you, Chadwick for your contribution to this world. You were an inspiration we didn’t even know was coming. Rest in power, sir.
