You ever walk into a room with a defined purpose in mind but once you get over the threshold of the door totally forgot what that purpose was? You know it was really important but you haven’t the faintest idea what it could be.  I must confess that happens to me much more than I would like to admit.  I can’t really blame it on old age (or at least I don’t want to, haha!).  Or maybe its lack of sleep, or distraction? I’m sure I’m not the only person who deals with this!

I think we’re sometimes like that with our dreams, our plans, our goals.  We start off with a clear mission and goal but get lost along the way.  We forget where we came from, forget the thing that used to keep us up at night, the dream we couldn’t stop telling people about!  We get distracted or tripped up by the rhythms of life and forget our very purpose!

That, I must confess, has been a problem I’ve had for a while! And while reading the story of Moses it got me thinking. When Moses left Egypt he forgot who he was! He forgot the training, and the life he lived after being shaken by a few mistakes in his life.  He had an ID problem.  Yes, an identification problem.  What in the world does ID have to do with forgetting why your are in the room? What in the world does ID have to do with Moses’s story?

Well let me tell you.  A whole lot!

When we forget our ID we forget that we are qualified for the task at hand.  We go running into the room of our dream ready to change the world but when stuff gets tough and we forget.  We forget that we are actually qualified. We forget we do have what it takes and that was exactly what Moses’s problem was.

God called him while he was in the wilderness to save a people and the first thing out of Moses’s mouth was “Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11)

What does he mean “who is he”?!

This is the same guy who was plucked from a river and raised as a prince in the house of the very same pharaoh he was going to confront. He learned all types of languages and philosophies while in the household of pharaoh. But, he made a few wrong turns in life and forgot his history and skills completely. He also didn’t know from what type of people he came from.  He didn’t really know what it meant to be an Israelite; that he and his people was chosen by the same God who is now calling him to do this great work.

I think we — well let me not speak for all of you– I think I forget that God has placed all the qualifications I need to do exactly what He called me to do.  I take a wrong turn or don’t move when I should (i.e. this blog haha!) and feel I can no longer do what it is I thought I was called to do! Yea that’s me. I’m sure you can relate? But the beautiful thing is that we can learn who we are. We can learn our ID.  We can learn that we were chosen before the beginning of time to do great exploits (Ephesians 2:10); that God has given us everything we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3); that He is faithful and just to complete the work He began in us (1 Thessalonians 5:24).  Its easy to learn.  Its all in His Word!!

Here are some verses that help shape my ID:

Open your mouth on behalf of those unable to speak,
for the justice of all who are destitute. Proverbs 31:8

Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. James 1:27

I challenge you.  Find your ID. Find out what God says about you in His Word, take it and put fuel under the fire of your dream!
